Who am I?
I am a graduate student at University of California, Berkeleys School of Information. I am doing a research project on how people use the internet for their art and creativity.
What am I doing here?
I am hanging out on deviantART as a way to learn more from you. How do you define art and creativity? How do you go about making the stuff you make? What made you get into creating the stuff you create in the first place? What inspires you? Where do you think this all taking you? How do you share it with others? These are some of the questions I am interested in. Im also trying to learn more about dA as a site where there are lots of people making and sharing lots of interesting things. From what I can tell thus far, the sites breadth and depth is quite amazing.
Like I said, my hopes here are to understand from you. I have seen a lot of things written that dont really take the perspectives of people into account. So, I am trying to understand the worlds of artists and creators from their perspectives, as best as I possibly can. Thats not an easy thing to do, considering how many different perspectives there are!
Along the way, I will be writing about that experience. My work will generally be appearing in academic journals or conferences (well, I hope they will be). In the future, if I am lucky, Ill be able to write for a wider audience. I know that there are others that find all of this as interesting as I do.
What do I know about art?
Of course, that depends on how you define art, and I am more interested in how you define it than how I do! However, since I was young, I have been interested in something I called art. I spent most of my childhood and teenage life drawing, but slowly moved away from it as I pursued other interests. I was fortunate to be able to go to Florence when I was in high school and see the work of Renaissance and Baroque artists. In college, I become interested in digital animation and computer-related design activities. I had the opportunity to go back to Florence and work on a project that involved creating digital models of some of Michelangelos greatest sculptures, including the David. I know its not easy to get there, but if you happen to have the chance to see the David in person, take advantage of it!
Meanwhile, Ive worked on a few digital art projects recently, including a series of gallery installations, which I may elaborate on later. I still doodle a lot and have phases of diving back into sketchbooks. A few years ago I learned how to use charcoal and had a lot of fun with it. I wouldnt mind getting charcoal everywhere a little more often than I do now.
Send me a note if you have any questions! I am happy to answer.

I'm very interested to find out more about your research. Can you tell me a bit more about what methods you are using and the type of research you are conducting?
I've got a background in social policy and research myself, so it's interesting to see someone else from the community taking a venture into this area.

Great question. I'm doing qualitative research. So I am doing an ethnography, which in this case means hanging out (both online and offline) and doing interviews. A key point is understanding what people do from their perspective.
What kind of work in social policy have you done?
